Workplace wellbeing is no longer a “nice to have” — it’s a vital part of building a thriving business and a strong, resilient team. At Crystal Clean, we believe that our people are our greatest asset, and their mental and emotional wellbeing is just as important as their physical safety.

That’s why our General Manager, Hayley Gray, recently completed a two-day Mental Health Awareness course to further support our commitment to staff wellbeing and fostering a supportive, open culture across our business.

Why Mental Health Awareness Matters

The cleaning industry, like many others, can be physically demanding — but it can also be emotionally draining. Tight schedules, lone working, demanding environments, and sometimes even feeling unseen can take their toll on staff. Mental health issues like stress, anxiety and burnout can go unnoticed and untreated if we don’t take a proactive approach to understanding and supporting our teams.

According to Mind UK, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem each year. Many of these individuals are in the workforce, trying to do their best while navigating personal challenges.

This is why mental health awareness and support isn’t just important — it’s essential.

What We Learned from Mental Health Training

The two-day course explored topics including:

  • The signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions
  • How to approach difficult conversations with care and sensitivity
  • How to build a culture where mental health is discussed openly and without stigma
  • What employers can do to support staff better — from policies to people-focused leadership

Reflecting on the experience, Hayley said:

“It really opened my eyes to how easy it can be to miss when someone is struggling, especially in roles like ours where people often work independently. I came away feeling better equipped to notice signs and offer support in a meaningful way. This training wasn’t just about ticking a box — it was about  how we can better create a workplace where people feel genuinely seen, heard and valued.”

Building a Supportive Culture

At Crystal Clean, we are proud of the culture we’ve built over the years — one that puts people first. But like any good team, we’re always striving to do better.

Here’s how we’re taking meaningful steps to support our staff’s mental and emotional wellbeing:

  1. Open Communication Channels

Supervisors and managers are encouraged to check in with staff regularly — not just about cleaning tasks, but about how they’re feeling. Whether it’s a quick phone call or a friendly face-to-face chat, we’re building relationships based on trust.

  1. Recognition and Appreciation

We know that feeling valued can make all the difference. Our Employee of the Moment programme and regular staff newsletters are designed to celebrate individuals who go above and beyond — not just in their cleaning tasks, but in embodying our values of reliability, respect and teamwork.

  1. Scheduled Working and Family Support

Life happens. We offer working schedules that wherever possible to support team members with family responsibilities, health needs or other commitments. We want work to fit around life — not the other way around.

  1. Investing in Training and Development

Training isn’t just about skills — it’s about confidence and self-worth. From mental health training to personal development opportunities, we’re passionate about helping our team grow. When people feel invested in, they’re more likely to thrive.

  1. Listening to Feedback

Our management meetings regularly include discussions around staff wellbeing. We look at what’s working and what needs improving. We encourage team members to share their thoughts — whether it’s through surveys, one-on-one conversations or anonymous feedback channels.

Why a Healthy Workplace Matters

Creating a mentally healthy workplace benefits everyone — not just the individuals who may be struggling.

When people feel safe, supported and valued:

  • Productivity increases
  • Absenteeism decreases
  • Retention improves
  • Morale soars
  • Team spirit flourishes

It’s not just about avoiding problems — it’s about building a culture that promotes resilience, positivity and growth.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Hayley’s recent mental health training is just one step on our journey. We’re already planning further wellbeing initiatives, including:

  • Making mental health part of our onboarding conversations
  • Offering simple signposting to mental health resources
  • Giving our supervisors more tools to support their teams effectively

We’re also continuing to look at how we can build in mental health support as part of our everyday work — not just once a year during Mental Health Awareness Week.

A Message from Hayley

“At Crystal Clean, we want everyone to feel that this isn’t just a job — it’s a place where you’re supported, respected, and encouraged to be your best self. I’m proud of the work we’ve done so far, but I know there’s always more we can do. Mental health matters, and we’re committed to making that a visible part of how we work, every single day.”

Mental health and wellbeing are not “extras” — they are fundamental to how we work, lead and support each other. At Crystal Clean, we are proud to put people first. With awareness, training, and a genuine commitment to creating a positive workplace culture, we believe we can make a real difference.
